Natalie Mihalek (R-40) for a Shop with a Cop event at South Hills Village! Students from several districts had the opportunity to shop with officers from different police departments to find back-to-school clothes and supplies. Thank you to all who participated! See more photos from the event here. TRIB: Local Search and Rescue Team Responsible for Countless Regionwide MissionsI was proud to vote for this year’s state budget, which included an additional $6 million for Urban Search and Rescue Strike Team 1 (USAR). USAR is an invaluable resource to the safety and emergency response preparedness of Southwestern Pennsylvania residents, which is why I fought so hard to expand it in 2024 and to fund it in both last year’s and this year’s budget. Read the full article from the Tribune-Review on USAR’s success here. National Dog DayThis week, we celebrated National Dog Day! From beloved pets providing companionship, to service dogs offering support, to working K-9s serving and protecting our communities, dogs really are a man’s best friend. Let’s be sure to give them extra love and treats! See more photos of dogs I’ve met throughout my time as a senator here. Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
This year’s state budget supports individuals with intellectual disabilities by increasing investments in assistive services for this vulnerable population by more than $104 million. This budget keeps our commitment to those with intellectual disabilities and their families by ensuring they receive the supportive services they need and deserve to live healthy, productive lives. As students across Pennsylvania return to school, it is past time for the commonwealth to ensure fairness for women and girls taking part in collegiate and junior and high school sports. Earlier this year, at the urging of students and parents across my district and Pennsylvania, the Senate approved bipartisan legislation – twice – to preserve opportunities for female athletes at public schools and colleges by requiring scholastic sports teams to be designated based on biological sex. Senate Bill 1293, which I was proud to vote for, would also allow students to take legal action if they are harmed by violations of this rule. Month after month, members of leadership in the House of Representatives have avoided voting on this reasonable legislation grounded in fairness. The bill has been moved to multiple House committees in a series of parliamentary maneuvers to intentionally avoid a vote. The longer House leadership delays, the more female athletes are at risk of being unfairly forced off the field or the winner’s podium. We must enact the Save Women’s Sports Act to restore common sense to scholastic sports. Learn more about the Save Women’s Sports Act here. Steel Center for Career and Technical Education Grand ReopeningI am pleased to congratulate Steel Center for Career and Technical Education on its grand reopening following a $36 million renovation and modernization project! These renovations will ensure students have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, commitment, and skills necessary to be successful in their careers. See more photos from the grand reopening here. Bethel Park New Pickleball PavillionCongratulations to the Municipality of Bethel Park on the completion of the new Pickleball Park Pavilion donated by the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary Club! Thank you to all the members who contributed their time and efforts to make this project possible. See more photos from the ribbon cutting here. Join Us in Honoring 9/11 First Responders
As we approach the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation, I’d like to invite you to an event I’m hosting with Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-40) to honor the brave men and women who responded that day. Our First Responder Appreciation Stair Climb & Recruitment event will be held on Friday, September 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Spencer Family YMCA in Bethel Park. All constituents are invited to attend and participate by completing various exercises designed to simulate the strenuous actions of the heroes on that terrifying day. Bethel Park firefighters will be on hand to discuss volunteer opportunities, including an educational partnership with the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) that may include free college classes. Constituents interested in attending can call Rep. Mihalek’s office at 724-942-2045 to RSVP. More information about this event is available here. Visit Pittsburgh Opens New OfficesCongratulations to Visit Pittsburgh on the grand opening of their new offices at Fifth Avenue Place! Completion of this space represents a new chapter in Visit Pittsburgh’s mission to help visitors discover the many fun and unique things to do in our great city. Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced the launch of the department’s online Financial Education Hub, a one-stop-shop of resources designed to help Pennsylvanians improve their financial literacy and make informed financial decisions. The new hub brings together state and federal resources covering topics such as budgeting, saving, retirement planning, digital assets, and cryptocurrencies. It also includes information on Treasury programs, like the PA 529 College and Career Savings Program, Keystone Scholars, and PA ABLE. Resources are organized for specific audiences including students, teachers, active military members, veterans, and older adults. Visit the Financial Education Hub here. Avoiding Student Loan Forgiveness Scams
Students and families take out significant loans to pay for higher education, which attracts scammers looking to exploit the situation. “Act immediately to qualify for student loan forgiveness” is just one of the high-pressure loan forgiveness pitches used to trick borrowers into sharing personal information. Scammers will frequently request an up-front or monthly fee while promising immediate and total student loan cancellation. Most government forgiveness programs require years of qualifying payments or employment in certain fields before forgiving loans. Be wary of aggressive language and check the source before clicking. Learn more about avoiding these scams here. Job Opportunities for Nurses at PA Veterans Homes
Pennsylvania’s six veterans homes care for our neighbors who answered the call to serve. The homes offer levels of care tailored to the specific health needs of residents and are supplemented with an array of clinical services. Pennsylvania veterans homes are looking to hire registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to provide the kind of care that will allow veterans to live an active and healthy life with as much independence as possible. Learn more about these opportunities and apply here. Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy Accepting Applications for 2027
Teenagers in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school have a chance at obtaining their basic education through the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy. Applications are being accepted for its first class of 2027, which begins in January at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County. There is no tuition cost to attend, and meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. The program lasts for five-and-a-half months as a residential phase and 24 months of mentorship by academy staff back in home communities. I was proud to vote for this year’s state budget, which included a funding increase of $80,000 for the Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy. Learn more about the Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy and apply here. Upcoming Events in the 37th DistrictLooking for things in the area to do this week? Check out these local events across the 37th District!
I’m proud to represent you in Harrisburg.
