In this Update:
National Night OutEarlier this week, I had a great time celebrating National Night Out with the Franklin Park Police Department. Additionally, congratulations to the Sewickley Borough Police Department on their inaugural National Night Out celebration. It was great to see the community come together at both events! National Night Out was celebrated across the 37th district with the goal to strengthen ties between our police officers and the communities they serve. Thank you to our law enforcement officers in Allegheny County and across the commonwealth and country for everything you do to keep us safe. Remembering Chief HotnichWhile at Franklin Park Borough’s National Night Out, I was honored to attend the bench dedication ceremony for Chief Joseph Hotnich. He was the first Chief of Police for Franklin Park Police Department. During his tenure, he laid the groundwork for the police department we know today! The bench was dedicated by his daughter, Theresa Scott, and can be enjoyed by the community in front of the Franklin Park Municipal Building. Helping Our NeighborsI was happy to join Feed the Children, Niagara Water, and Moon Area School District as they teamed up to provide $150,000 worth of food, water, personal care items and books to 200 low-income families in the Mooncrest Neighborhood programs. Thank you to all who volunteered! New Law Extends PA Guard Family Education BenefitThe Military Family Education Program (MFEP) covers the cost of a state college education for dependents of Pennsylvania National Guard members in return for a six-year service obligation. We passed a new law ensuring additional dependents are covered each time the member commits to an additional service obligation. Act 32 of 2025 clarifies that a Guard member can receive a new MFEP assistance grant – helping an additional dependent – with each new service obligation. I was proud to support this family benefit for our men and women in uniform. Senate Acts to Ensure More Efficient Government SpendingThe Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission would be able to spend funds more efficiently under legislation passed by the Senate. The aim is to keep costs as low as possible for anglers and boaters. Currently, commission revenues are directed into either the Fish Fund or the Boat Fund, with no crossover permitted. This rigidity has led to inefficiencies and higher costs. Senate Bill 800 permits Fish Fund dollars to be used for expenditures and programs that benefit boaters and Boat Fund dollars to be used for expenditures and programs that benefit anglers, as long as they also benefit the original intent of the respective funds. The bill was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. How to Avoid Heat-Related IllnessesSummer is the time for outdoor fun, but heat can cause serious and potentially fatal health problems such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. When it’s sweltering out, avoid heat-related illnesses by limiting activity to mornings and evenings when possible, drinking plenty of fluids and getting out of the sun when necessary. You can learn about spotting symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion here. Planning a PA Capitol VisitYour Pennsylvania Capitol is not only the seat of state government, it’s also an architectural and artistic treasure to be experienced by citizens from across the commonwealth. Visitors are welcome to explore the building at their leisure on regular weekdays. You can also schedule a tour with a guide. Tours take about 30 to 45 minutes. You can plan a visit and book a tour of this 119-year-old National Historic Landmark here. Take My Minimum Wage Survey! If you have not yet taken my minimum wage survey, there is still time to do so. Pennsylvania’s minimum wage is an ongoing debate, with several bills introduced in recent years that would increase it in various ways. The Labor and Industry Committee is where these bills are initially considered within the Senate. As chair of this Committee, I want to hear from YOU, my constituents, on minimum wage. Please take this survey to share your thoughts here!
I’m proud to represent you in Harrisburg. Please contact me if my team can assist you with any state-level issues or services, including PennDOT, PA Department of Revenue, PA Department of Aging, PA State Treasury, etc. I’m always happy to hear from constituents, but if you need assistance or have concerns regarding a federal issue, you may want to contact your U.S. Senators and/or your member in the U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you. For anyone who hasn’t already signed up to receive my e-newsletters, you can get on the mailing list here. |
