Weekend Highlights

It was a busy, fun weekend in the 37th district! I was glad to attend several events and see so many neighbors in our community.

Saturday

Shop with a Cop round two was another great experience to help some lucky area students get ready for school. Thanks to the PA State Police, Allegheny County Camp Cadet, and Macy’s at South Hills Village for partnering for this event with police departments from Upper St. Clair, Upper St. Clair School District, Bridgeville, South Park School District, Collier Township, Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Allegheny County Police Department, and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office.

Thank you to all who supported the Bradford Woods Volunteer Fire Company’s pancake breakfast and bike parade. The young bikers of Bradford Woods had a blast!

Every year at South Fayette Township’s Community Day, I take a photo with my friend Jack. These photos are five years apart! Time flies! I enjoyed seeing so many old friends and connecting with new neighbors at this year’s event.

So great to see so many area fire departments and residents came out for the ‘Battle of the Barrel’ organized by Oakdale Hose Company 215. It taught teamwork, skill, and cooled us off on a hot day, and most importantly it raised money for a fight against cancer for one of our own.

Thank you to the Bhutanese Community Association of Pittsburgh for inviting me to their celebration and health fair! It was a very festive, fun, and educational event.

Congratulations to Jim Leyland, Manny Sanguillen, and Barry Bonds on their induction into the Hall of Fame at PNC Park! Raise the Jolly Roger!

It was great to see so many people turn out at for “A Night at the Races” at the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department. The fun event beneifted the Colts Boys Basketball program at Chartiers Valley School District.

I was glad to catch up with friends and support the Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh at the Wags, Whiskers, and Wings 2024 event!

We brought the day to a close in Knob Hill Park for Marshall Township’s Community Day featuring games, food, fireworks, and a special performance by the NA Fiddlers. I hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did!

Sunday

Sunday started with Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company’s Car Cruise. There were some gorgeous classic vehicles on display!

Jeep and Bronco owners, don’t forget, your doors can legally come off in PA in just a few weeks! Read more here.

Great time golfing for a great cause with Restore 22! This nonprofit travels around helping veterans over a coffee in the area. Thank you for all the important work you do!

Enjoying the great outdoors! Thanks to Rennerdale Volunteer Fire Department for hosting their annual fishing contest; it was a great way to cultivate interest in fishing for those 15 and under. They are also raising funds to rehabilitate the duck pond with a new waterfall, new drainage, fix the ecosystem, and stock new wildlife.

I really enjoyed the final performance of the season of Collier Township Parks and Recreation’s ‘Concert in the Park’ series. The West Hills Symphonic Band was excellent! Thank you to the musicians and Collier Township for being flexible and rescheduling after the June date was postponed due to inclement weather.

Business Around Town

Innovation right here in SD-37!  Thank you to the amazing staff and leadership of Covestro for inviting me to the ribbon cutting on their upgraded facilities.  The manufacturer of high-quality polymer materials invested $40 million into its Robinson campus.  Covestro employs over 700 of our neighbors who produce very strong, lightweight vehicle components, rigid insulation boards, soft mattresses, and many other products!

Thank you to Brentwood Bank’s Wexford location for hosting the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber’s Legislative Breakfast. We discussed our region’s public transit opportunities and challenges with the Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, and ACTA.

I was happy to join other state, federal, and local officials from our region at CONSOL Energy Inc. headquarters to discuss energy policy, future demand, economic opportunity, national security, responsible production, and innovative technology.

Growing the region: I visited the northern section of my district to join other leaders from our area in discussing economic opportunities and business development for Southwestern PA. Thank you to the University of Pittsburgh Institute of Politics for organizing this meeting.

Congratulations, Sergeant Oslick!

Congratulations are in order for the new Sergeant Oslick! I was proud to attend the ceremony promoting Mr. William Oslick of the Collier Township Police Department to the rank of Sergeant. Thank you, Sergeant Oslick, and the entire force at Collier Township for your service to our community!

A Closer Look at Efforts to Improve Water Quality

August is National Water Quality Month. I was glad to advocate for funding in the 2024-25 budget for the Clean Streams Fund. This $50 million investment helps farmers reduce sediment in waterways through the Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program. To date, the program has supported more than 700 projects to reduce sediment in waterways throughout the state.

Because of the initiative, water quality has improved in Pennsylvania and downstream. The Chesapeake Bay recently earned its best rating in more than 20 years in the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Bay Report Card.

Wondering How to Check the Status of a PTRR Rebate?

Checks and direct deposit payments from the state’s 2023 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program went out July 1 and will be mailed on a rolling basis through the Dec. 31 deadline. If you filed for a property tax or rent rebate and would like to know the status of it, check online or call 1-888-PATAXES (728-2937).

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate is available to senior citizens and people with disabilities who meet income guidelines. Claim forms are available by contacting my district office, where assistance in applying for the program is also available at no charge.

If you need assistance filing your rebate application, my office is hosting a clinic with Rep. Natalie Mihalek’s office on Thursday, October 3rd at the Bethel Park Community Center. My office is also happy to assist you at any time during our business hours; appointments and walk-ins are welcome.

Find more information, including eligibility guidelines, here.

Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Workforce on Labor Day

Millions of men and women who are members of Pennsylvania’s workforce keep our economy chugging along. Their hard work benefits communities all across the state and even country.

On Labor Day, I recognize their accomplishments and wish them some well-deserved relaxation.
