Remembering September 11th

Never forget: I am always very grateful and deeply humbled to be invited as the keynote speaker to honor those we lost on 9/11/2001. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus Corpus Christi Council 12043 for organizing such a moving tribute at St. Barbara Church.

Leading up to Wednesday’s remembrance ceremony, I attended a wonderful event supporting ‘Tunnel to Towers’ Foundation. My good friend Jessica Lynch was there to offer inspiring words and sign a few copies of her book.

Doorless Driving is Now in Effect in PA!

Doorless driving is officially legal in Pennsylvania! I am so thrilled that my legislation, Senate Bill 298, was signed into law recently as Act 61 or 2024. This bill aligns our Commonwealth with the rest of the country while adhering to logistical and safety standards important to both residents and law enforcement.

I am grateful for the bipartisan, bicameral support that helped this bill reach the finish line. Time to take off those doors and enjoy!

Supporting Schools, Students

I spent a lot of time this past legislative session advocating for our students and schools, from supporting historic funding for public education, to working toward ensuring lead-free drinking water, to helping students of military families get acclimated to new schools.

I am proud to share these legislative accomplishments to support our students and faculty across Allegheny County, and look forward continuing this progress with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle this fall!

PA State Police to Host Women’s Career Expo

Mark your calendar: The Pennsylvania State Police is hosting a Women’s Career Expo. This free, one-day event is open to those interested in a challenging and fulfilling career. Opportunities range from Trooper to civilian jobs. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 from 8:30a-2p at the PA State Police Academy in Hershey, PA.  Good luck!

Parkway West Road Closure

Detour or Delay! PennDOT will temporarily close the ramp at the I-376 (Parkway West) & I-79 interchange for milling and repaving. Weather permitting, the closure will start this Wednesday, September 18th from 6:00PM until Thursday, September 19th at 5:00 AM. The posted detour will be: Continue travelling on Southbound 79 to exit 57 (Carnegie), make a left at West Main Street and then a right back onto the onramp for I-79 Northbound, follow Northbound I-79 to exit 59B for I-376 Westbound, end detour. Safe travels!

Community Highlights

Thank you to everyone who made Bethel Park’s Community Day and Parade a great success! I enjoyed a very fun afternoon meeting many great neighbors.

I stopped by Sewickley’s Annual Harvest Festival! Thank you to the Quaker Valley Rotary and Kiwanis of Sewickley for putting on a great event.

Thank you to Sayee Patil and Kiran Patil for inviting me to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi!

Robinson Tours Carnegie Mellon University

An unbelievable tour of Carnegie Mellon University School of Engineering! Thank you, CMU. The Max Manufacturing Initiative Fund I spearheaded aims to bridge our industrial past and the additive manufacturing future – setting conditions to attract or retain our best & brightest. I was happy to see its application firsthand today.

Much R&D work is done at the CMU College of Engineering and transferred to real-world, industrial applications at Neighborhood 91 Pittsburgh International Airport. Metal powders, light as flour and made to spec, are heated by laser and printed to desired need. Amazing advancements in ‘smart manufacturing.’

How to File a Banking Complaint

Consumers who have unsuccessfully attempted to resolve disputes with their financial institutions regarding services or products have options.

Complaints may be submitted to the Department of Banking and Securities Consumer Services Office online or toll-free by calling 1-800-PA-BANKS (1-800-722-2657) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The department aims to provide responses to consumer complaints within 10 days of receipt.

While the Consumer Services Office will make the effort to address consumer complaints, there is no guarantee the matter can or will be resolved. However, complaints are important because they allow the Department of Banking and Securities to identify patterns of unfair or deceptive practices that may result in further action.

Applications Open: Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy for At-Risk Youth

The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its class, which begins in January 2025. KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, as well as learning leadership, self-discipline and responsibility.

The program is open to 16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are at risk of not graduating from high school, no longer attending any school or have not received a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, free of felony convictions and voluntarily commit to the program. If selected, students will attend the 22-week residential phase at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County.

Learn more about eligibility requirements and begin the application process here. Anyone who prefers to have an application mailed or would like to talk with someone about the program may contact the academy by emailing RA-MVPAChallenge@pa.gov or calling 717-861-7767.

Free Webinars Provide Useful College Financial Aid Info

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is holding free webinars to assist college-bound students and their families with navigating the financial aid process.

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, at noon, speakers will discuss the financial aid timeline. On Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m., speakers will focus on how to search for scholarships and pay for any remaining costs.

Register to attend the one-hour webinars.

National Voter Registration Day is a Great Reminder

Tuesday, Sept. 17, is National Voter Registration Day. The last day to register to vote in Pennsylvania before the Nov. 5 election is Monday, Oct. 21. You may submit your application online, by mail to your county voter registration office or in person at your county voter registration office. Active-duty military members or veterans who are hospitalized or bedridden may register at any time. Learn more about that option.

POW/MIA Recognition Day

On September 20, we honor the service and sacrifice of the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action who served our country. I was proud to sponsor Senate Resolution 150 in 2023, which encourages us to rededicate our efforts to bring our patriots home and care for the families of those who are still missing.

Thank you to every one of these brave men and women who have given so much to protect our freedoms. You are never forgotten.

A Special Evening in Bridgeville

Monday was a special night in Bridgeville Borough. First responders, health care providers, and community members who came to the aid of Mr. Adonis Whitner were recognized. He is a local FedEx driver who collapsed on his delivery route earlier this summer. God put me, my neighbor, Mr. Whitner, and others together at this critical moment, and thankfully Mr. Whitner has been recovering well.

Special thank you to Mark MacCala, Chief King and the Bridgeville Police Department, Chief Daniel Miller and the SouthBridge EMS, Chief Costain and the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department, and everyone at the St. Clair Hospital Emergency Department who assisted in Mr. Whitner’s recovery. Wonderful to see everyone!
