Upcoming Senior Assistance Clinic at Bethel Park Community Center

Allegheny County seniors and veterans are invited to join PA State Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-40) and me for our upcoming Senior Assistance Clinic on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bethel Park Community Center. Knowledgeable staff will be available to provide assistance with popular government services, such as applying for the Property Tax and Rent Rebate, a Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) Senior Connect Card, or reclaiming unclaimed property from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department.

Interested constituents are kindly asked to RSVP by 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 by calling Rep. Mihalek’s office at 724-942-2045. More details about the event are available here.

Advertising Veterans’ Resources in Workplaces

Beginning this month, all employers with more than 50 employees are required to physically display or post on their websites a notice from the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, providing contact information for veterans’ resources and information regarding federal and state benefits and services for veterans.

I was proud to vote in favor of this commonsense measure supporting our servicemembers.

Free Help for Veterans to Review and Update Benefits

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is reminding veterans to ensure they are receiving the maximum benefits they can by applying and reviewing their veterans’ benefits for the new year. Veterans can access free assistance in doing this through the DMVA, county offices, and some veteran service organizations.

Additionally on the second Tuesday of each month, my office hosts a benefits expert from the American Legion. If you would like to schedule an appointment with the representative, you may call my office at 412-785-3070.

Expanding Community Care for Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is working to expand veteran access to non-VA medical providers through the Community Care Program. The VA recently announced it is using the upcoming expiration of current contracts with health plans who serve as third-party administrators of the program as an opportunity to provide more choices and better care for veterans when they need to access care outside of the VA.

Remembering the 81st Anniversary of Iwo Jima

On February 19, we remember the anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Fought from February 19 to March 26, 1945, Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps History. During this battle, the United States Armed Forces lost 6,821 troops, and more than 19,000 were wounded or captured. While the loss was incomprehensible, the valor was unmatched. More medals of honor were awarded during this battle than any other in American history.

I was honored to be gifted a small bottle of authentic sand from the beach at Iwo Jima. I keep it in my Bethel Park District Office to serve as a reminder of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom during this intense battle.

May we always honor those who served and sacrificed during this moment in history 81 years ago.

Veterans Fitness & Wellness Program

Veterans with spinal cord injuries, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers can sign up for free, virtual classes through Paralyzed Veterans of America designed to improve strength, endurance, and hand-eye coordination for veterans with mobility issues. The classes are available to veterans of all levels and abilities and are intended to improve stress management, cardiovascular health, mental health, and more.

Remembering Desert Storm

35 years ago on February 28, 1991, Operation Desert Storm concluded. The operation was a large-scale military effort led by the United States to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait, following Iraq’s invasion in 1990. With a swift and powerful air and ground campaign, the coalition forces liberated Kuwait and significantly weakened Saddam Hussein’s regime. The operation remains a key moment in modern military history.

Thank you to all who served and sacrificed during this mission.
