$3.5 Million in State Funding for Local Projects
This week, I announced awards for several projects across the 37th senatorial district totaling more than $3.5 million in Local Share Account (LSA) funds from the Commonwealth Financing Authority. From public safety and emergency response, to parks, infrastructure, and essential services, this funding will help local communities address important needs and improve the quality of life for the people who live and work here. I’m very proud to support these projects and appreciate the hard work and dedication that local leaders pour into our townships and municipalities. I also want to thank my colleagues in the House of Representatives for joining me in helping bring these important state resources back to our communities: Reps. Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of 9/11Last week was somber and significant as our nation recognized the 25th anniversary of 9/11. My staff and I were grateful to participate in several remembrance ceremonies in our local communities:
Thank you to all who attended the First Responder Appreciation Stair Climb and Recruitment event I sponsored with Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-40) at the Spencer Family YMCA Bethel Park. To honor the brave men and women who responded on Sept. 11, 2001, attendees completed various exercises designed to simulate the courageous actions of the heroes on that day. Thank you to those who gathered at Sunny Slope in South Park to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and recognize the sacrifices made by those who answered the call that day. As co-chair of the 9/11 Memorial Trail Caucus, I was glad to speak with WTAE-TV Pittsburgh about my support of the mission of the Trail to honor the heroes from that terrible yet historic day. The 9/11 Memorial Trail will do this by “creating and championing a living memorial that connects the three attack sites, educates future generations, and brings communities together through shared remembrance.” See my interview with WTAE here. SHIM Unveils Rooftop Solar System
Congratulations to South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) on the unveiling of their new rooftop solar system! Thank you to the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club for providing the new system. This improvement will save SHIM $4,000 annually, which can be used to buy more than 500 lbs. of food for neighbors. Thank you for continuing to faithfully serve the South Hills communities! September is Veterans Suicide Awareness Month, which recognizes the silent struggles many veterans face. Trauma, stress, depression, addiction, and loneliness are challenges no one should handle alone. Veterans deserve our unwavering support not only in recognition of their service, but also in addressing the burdens they may carry. To bring awareness to this issue, I’ve partnered with my colleagues and fellow veterans, Sens. Tracy Pennycuick, Gene Yaw, Greg Rothman, Doug Mastriano, and Cris Dush, to introduce a resolution designating September 2026 as Veterans Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. As the chair of the Senate Labor & Industry Committee, I’m proud to support workers by backing policies that create jobs, ensure fair labor practices, and strengthen the economic vitality of our commonwealth. See my legislative accomplishments here, many of which focus on promoting our commonwealth’s workforce. Preventing Eminent Domain Abuse
Property owners scored a key victory this legislative session when the Senate unanimously approved a measure to protect and financially compensate them if targeted by eminent domain abuse. Senate Bill 225 would ensure business owners and farmers whose properties are seized through eminent domain are compensated for loss of “goodwill,” which goes beyond the assessed value. For farms, the land may possess characteristics that make it particularly special, such as fertile soil. In the case of another business, goodwill may be the location, access to utilities, and other factors. This bill received unanimous support in the Senate and is awaiting House action. As students settle in for the new school year, they should know about a resource available if they’re concerned about the wellbeing of themselves or others. Authorized by the General Assembly, Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” before it is too late. Students can report concerns by phone at 844-723-2729, by emailing info@safe2saypa.org, or on the Safe2Say website, where they can also download the Safe2Say Something app. Truck Drivers Appreciation Week
This week, we recognized truck drivers throughout the U.S. for their hard work – thank you for keeping America moving! I’m proud to have voted for legislation to support truck drivers through CDL reforms that will strengthen standards for commercial drivers and increase penalties for unsafe operation of large trucks. Learn more about the legislation here. “See Tracks? Think Train” Week Promotes Rail Safety
Pennsylvania recorded 56 collisions at rail grade crossings last year, resulting in three fatalities and 24 injuries. There were also 34 deaths and 15 injuries involving people trespassing on rail property. Nationwide, a person or vehicle is struck by a train roughly every three hours. Railroad tracks are private property and should never be used as a walking path, shortcut, or setting for photographs. Drivers and pedestrians should always expect a train, cross only at designated crossings, and obey warning lights and crossing gates. “See Tracks? Think Train” Week, observed from Sept. 21 to 27, aims to raise awareness of the danger; reduce collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail crossings; and discourage trespassing on or near railroad tracks. When a crisis strikes, faith-based communities are often among the first places people turn for help, hope, and support. Houses of worship, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations can learn how to play a vital role before, during, and after a crisis via a free Pennsylvania Department of Homeland Security webinar on Oct. 15.
