Remembering the Fallen on Memorial Day
My offices will be closed on Monday, May 25 in honor of Memorial Day. As I do every year, I am looking forward to attending events throughout the 37th district this Memorial Day weekend to honor our fallen heroes. To all the men and women who selflessly gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear, thank you. To the families who are missing a loved one from their lives, please know that loss was not in vain. We remember and honor their sacrifice. “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” – Unknown Sign up for your American Legion Appointment for Assistance with Veterans’ Benefits
On the second Tuesday of each month, my office hosts Graham Wieland, a veterans’ benefits expert from the American Legion. He is available to answer any questions or help solve any issues a veteran may have obtaining their benefits. West Allegheny Students Enlist in U.S. Armed ForcesLast month was Military Enlistment Day at West Allegheny School District where students made the honorable and lifechanging decision to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Congratulations to these students and thank you for committing to serve our country!
Check out more photos from the enlistment ceremony here. Bethel Park Veterans CeremonyThis past weekend, Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-40) and I joined George Reganick and others at the Municipality of Bethel Park’s municipal building to honor veterans and businesses that serve veterans. It was great to connect with those in attendance, and thank you for your service! Check out more photos from the ceremony here. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Clark Testing in Jefferson BoroughI was proud to help secure a $500,000 grant for Clark Testing to purchase the new Electrodynamic Vibration Shaker System, putting Pittsburgh on the map as the premier destination on the east coast for large-scale product testing. This new equipment is enabling Clark Testing to better support our community as the expansion of local companies translates to the creation of new jobs with competitive wages and benefits, helping to provide stability for families which keeps talented workers right here in Western Pennsylvania. With customers like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics, it’s clear that Clark Testing plays a vital role in verifying the safety and efficiency of the tools used by our nation’s military, helping to build confidence in the safety of our troops. Check out more photos from the ribbon cutting ceremony here. Fourth Annual Women Veterans Day Commemoration
The fourth annual Women Veterans Day Commemoration to honor the service, sacrifice, and contributions of women who have served in the U.S. military will be held at the Pennsylvania State Capitol June 10 at 11:30 a.m. Veterans and their families or guests are invited to attend. The theme of this year’s ceremony will be “What Service Means to Me,” and it will feature a virtual display with submissions from women veterans around the state, complete with their likeness and a personal reflection about their service. The virtual display will be available online here beginning June 8. Read more about this special commemoration. Requiring Public Schools to Display the POW/MIA Flag
The Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 835 which would require all Pennsylvania public schools already displaying the American flag to also display the POW/MIA flag. The POW/MIA flag is a powerful symbol recognizing and honoring the courageous men and women of the Armed Forces who remain prisoners of war or missing in action. By displaying this flag, schools also demonstrate their commitment to supporting military families and educating students about the importance of service. Read more about Senate Bill 835. Additionally, each year I’m proud to partner with Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) to sponsor legislation designating POW/MIA Recognition Day in Pennsylvania to honor those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. It serves as a reminder to rededicate our efforts to bring our patriots home and care for our military families awaiting word of their loved ones. Learn more about the legislation here. Finally, last month, we observed National Former POW Recognition Day. This was an opportunity to pay our respects to those who have been held captive by enemy forces. Their stories are powerful and full of courage, resilience, and grit. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their brave service to our country. Honoring Betty Digby for Lifetime AchievementsWe recently recognized Mrs. Betty Digby for being inducted into the South Hills High School Lifetime Hall of Fame. A 1941 graduate of South Hills High School, Mrs. Digby attended the Stenotype School of Pittsburgh, and, to her great credit, she served this country with honor and distinction as a member of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service program in the United States Navy. Mrs. Digby attended basic training at Hunter College in New York before joining the Naval Training School for Yeomen at Iowa State Teachers College, where she achieved the rank of Yeomen Second Class and eventually earned a position in the Executive Office of the Secretary of the Navy in Washington, D.C. Following her military service, Mrs. Digby attended the University of Pittsburgh and worked in the office of a local attorney before accepting a position at The Hillman Company. Mrs. Digby is to be commended for her commitment to personal and professional success, and she has truly bettered herself through her many achievements. Congratulations, Mrs. Digby, upon your richly deserved recognition! Check out more photos from Mrs. Digby’s recognition ceremony here. Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension Program
